IFOND was started by Anne and Fred Diehl when they learned, after visits to many different eye specialists, that the sudden vision loss their 25 year old son experienced was caused by Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON). The diagnosis was easy once they found doctors familiar with Leber's and with the LHON diagnostic blood test, developed in 1992. As the Diehls began to inform themselves about LHON, they encountered the excitement among researchers worldwide over progress in understanding the underlying causes of Leber's and other diseases of the optic nerve and nervous system. The Diehls realized the work of a foundation dedicated to optic nerve disease could help move this work forward and help other families afflicted.

Founded in Cornwall in 1995, IFOND's mission is to support research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of Optic Nerve Disease; and to disseminate relevant information to health care workers, patients, and families affected.   Researchers have made 12 field trips to rural Brazil in order to study the largest LHON pedigree in the world. These investigations have been fully described in previous reports and have led to approximately 16 peer-reviewed publications and approximately 55 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual symposium presentations. These investigations and publications have changed the face of LHON as studied, taught and clinically treated.

The Cornwall Lions have supported IFOND since its inception by promoting their effort and providing financial support. In 2015, we are recognizing this long-standing support by specifically allocating a portion of the proceeds of the Fall Harvest Race.  Visit IFOND.org for additional information.

Marcello is a vibrant 10 year old boy who lives in Monroe, NY with his parents and younger brother.  Marcello has LCHAD, a rare genetic fatty oxidation metabolic disorder. Sadly, one of the biggest side effects of this disorder is he will eventually lose his vision from retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration. There are approximately 250 children in the U.S. with this disease.  There are very few research studies that have been done to better understand this specific condition. However, the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics has started a research study to determine the cause of retinopathy resulting from LCHAD Deficiency, so there is some renewed optimism for the families of children with this disorder. Our fundraising goal is to raise $20k in order to bridge the financial gap until OHSU hopefully receives a very promising grant they have applied for. Without these funds, the study will cease until the grant is awarded

Marcello's Miracle Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, is a non-profit organization dedicated to advance cures through scientific research for pediatric inherited eye disorders that cause blindness, while also providing a means of charitable support for affected families whose children are experiencing loss of vision as a result of their disorder. Read 10 year-old Marchello's story.

The Cornwall Lions are proud to support Marcello's Miracle Foundation by promoting their effort and providing financial support by allocating a portion of the proceeds of the Fall Harvest Race.
